A station designed to make observations and meteorological reports for use in international air navigation (ICAO). Aeronautical meteorological stations make routine observations at fixed intervals. At aerodromes, the routine observations are supplemented by special observations whenever specified changes occur with respect to surface wind, visibility, runway visual range, present weather, and/or clouds. Other nonroutine observations, such as observations for takeoff and landing, are made as agreed between the meteorological authority and the appropriate ATS (air traffic services) authority.
